“From Star Wars to Storytelling: Dante Briggins on Crafting His Cinematic Legacy”

In this exclusive interview hosted by Rodartin S.L.’s Darwin Reina, we dive into the creative mind of Dante Briggins — Director, Writer, Actor, and founder of Luminalens Entertainment in New York City. With credits in blockbuster hits like Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Dante shares his journey from modeling to directing, his passion for storytelling, and his transition to focusing exclusively on writing and directing. Currently working on Who Dat: The J.T. Money Story, Dante continues to inspire and innovate, leaving a profound impact on the world of film.

How did you first get into the industry, and what inspired you to pursue a career in film?

My journey in the entertainment industry began as a runway and print model. An opportunity arose to be the male lead in a music video, which introduced me to acting. I fell in love with the craft and spent several years in front of the camera, immersing myself in both the business and the art of acting. This experience allowed me to work on notable projects such as “Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

These roles deepened my passion for storytelling and solidified my commitment to a career in film.

As an actor/director, what do you enjoy most about the creative process?

As an actor, I find profound fulfillment in delving into diverse characters and bringing them to life. The process of understanding a character’s motivations, emotions, and backstory allows me to explore facets of the human experience that I might not encounter in my own life. This journey of discovery enhances my craft and fosters empathy and a deeper connection to the world around me.

Transitioning to the director’s chair, my passion lies in the holistic creation of a narrative. Directing offers the opportunity to shape the story’s vision, guiding every element — from performance to cinematography — to serve the overarching narrative. Collaborating with a talented team to weave together these components into a cohesive and impactful story is an exhilarating experience. Witnessing the initial concept evolve into a finished piece that resonates with audiences is, for me, the pinnacle of the creative process.

How do you cope with rejection and setbacks, and how do you celebrate your successes?

In the entertainment industry, rejection and setbacks are inevitable. I view these challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. Each experience, whether positive or negative, offers valuable insights that contribute to my development as an artist and professional. Maintaining resilience and a forward-looking perspective enables me to navigate the industry’s ups and downs.

When it comes to celebrating successes, I believe in acknowledging and appreciating each milestone, no matter how small. Sharing these moments with my support network of family, friends, and colleagues adds depth to the celebration. Reflecting on achievements not only provides motivation but also reinforces the passion that drives my work in film.

What is your method or preparation process when approaching a new role or project?

As a director, my preparation process is both comprehensive and immersive. I begin by thoroughly analyzing the script to understand the narrative, themes, and character dynamics. This involves delving into each character’s background, motivations, and relationships to build a nuanced portrayal.

To authentically depict the story, I engage in pertinent research, which may include studying specific time periods, professions, or psychological profiles relevant to the narrative. I also explore visual styles and techniques that can enhance the storytelling.

Collaboration is a cornerstone of my process. I actively engage with actors, writers, and the creative team to gain diverse perspectives and insights. This collaborative approach enriches my understanding and often uncovers layers of the story that I might not have discovered independently.

Finally, I believe in the importance of remaining adaptable. Each project is unique, and being open to spontaneous moments during rehearsals and filming can lead to profound and genuine performances. This flexibility allows the narrative to evolve organically within the story’s framework.

By integrating thorough analysis, dedicated research, collaborative engagement, and adaptability, I strive to bring depth and authenticity to every project I undertake.

What motivates you to keep pushing forward in such a challenging industry?

In the face of the entertainment industry’s inherent challenges, my unwavering motivation stems from a profound belief that my purpose on this planet is to create. The act of bringing stories to life, whether through acting or directing, is not merely a profession for me but a calling that resonates deeply within.

This intrinsic drive to create compels me to navigate the industry’s obstacles with resilience and determination. Each project presents an opportunity to explore new narratives, evoke emotions, and connect with audiences on a meaningful level. The fulfillment I derive from this creative process reinforces my commitment to persevere, continually push boundaries, and contribute authentically to the world of film.

Which two actors or directors would you most like to collaborate with, and why?

Collaborating with actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie, as well as directors such as Martin Scorsese and Michael Moore, would be a profound honor.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s dedication to his craft and his ability to embody complex characters have always inspired me. His performances in films like “The Revenant” and “Inception” showcase his versatility and commitment to storytelling. Working alongside him would provide an opportunity to delve deep into character development and narrative nuance.

Margot Robbie’s dynamic range and fearless approach to her roles are equally compelling. Her portrayal of Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya” and her recent role in “Barbie” highlight her adaptability and depth as an actress. Collaborating with her would be an exciting exploration of character interplay and emotional authenticity.

Martin Scorsese’s unparalleled storytelling and directorial mastery have significantly influenced modern cinema. His work in “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “Shutter Island” demonstrates a profound understanding of human nature and narrative structure. Partnering with him would be an invaluable experience in crafting compelling and impactful stories.

Michael Moore’s thought-provoking documentaries, such as “Fahrenheit 9/11” and “Bowling for Columbine,” showcase his commitment to social commentary and truth-seeking. Collaborating with him would offer a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful storytelling that challenges perspectives and inspires dialogue.

Working with these esteemed professionals would not only be a career milestone but also a chance to contribute to impactful storytelling that resonates with audiences.

If you were not pursuing a career in film, what other profession might you have chosen?

If I were not pursuing a career in film, I would have likely dedicated myself to archaeology. My passion for history has been a lifelong obsession, driving me to explore the depths of human civilization and uncover the stories of our past. Currently, I am completing a degree in anthropology with a concentration in environmental sustainability at Southern New Hampshire University. This academic pursuit has deepened my understanding of the intricate relationship between humans and their environments throughout history. The meticulous research and analytical skills required in archaeology parallel the investigative aspects of character development and storytelling in film, reflecting my enduring commitment to exploring and narrating the human experience.

What advice would you give to aspiring actors and directors who may be on the verge of giving up?

To aspiring actors and directors who may feel disheartened, remember: your dreams are only dreams until you make them a reality. The path in the entertainment industry is fraught with challenges, but perseverance is key. Embrace each setback as a learning opportunity and stay committed to your passion. As Denzel Washington wisely said, “Dreams without goals are just dreams. And they ultimately fuel disappointment. Goals are on the road to achievement [and] cannot be achieved without discipline and consistency.” Set clear goals, remain disciplined, and consistently work towards them. Surround yourself with supportive individuals, seek continuous learning, and never lose sight of the creative spark that ignited your journey. You can turn aspirations into tangible achievements by transforming your dreams into actionable goals and steadfastly pursuing them.

What words of inspiration or resilience would you like to share with others in the industry or those just starting out?

In the entertainment industry, the journey can be as challenging as it is rewarding. One of the most valuable pieces of advice I can offer to those embarking on this path is to cherish and nurture your network, collaborations, and friendships. These relationships form the bedrock of your support system — they are the individuals who will stand by you through trials and triumphs alike.

An Irish proverb beautifully encapsulates this sentiment: “There are good ships and wood ships, ships that sail the sea, but the best ships are friendships, may they always be.”

In this industry, where uncertainty is a constant companion, the strength drawn from genuine connections can be the anchor that keeps you grounded. Invest time in building and maintaining these relationships, for they not only provide emotional support but also open doors to opportunities and collaborations that can shape your career. Remember, while talent and hard work are crucial, it’s the bonds you form along the way that often make the journey worthwhile.
